Kuching City and River Tour (1400hrs-1800hrs / 4 hours)

The perfect introduction to Sarawak’s historic capital, this tour includes Kuching’s Chinatown, the Cat Statue (Kuching means “Cat” in Malay), the colourful Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, and the famous Sarawak’s Natural History and Art Museum. Return via the golden-domed City Mosque and through Old Kuching, passing the Gambier Street with spice dealers and textile shops. Pass by the heritage buildings of the White Rajah era, the Pavilion, the Square Tower, the Court House, the Charles Brooke Monument and the Post Office. At every point, we will be stopping by to taste a little bit of many things for the gastronomic experience in the Cat City. After the tour, proceed with one hour river cruise on the Sarawak River. A traditional albeit modern way to see and appreciate historic Kuching would be a boat cruise along the Sarawak River. It provides a time-honored view of the city and its surroundings that is impossible to experience on land.

Return to hotel after tour ends. Free and easy for the rest of the day.

Bako National Park (0830hrs-1500hrs / Daytrip)

This small peninsular, accessible only by boat, is home to seven distinct ecosystems, giving rise to a remarkable diversity of animals and plant life. Bako’s most famous residents are the bizarre proboscis monkeys. It is also home to the silvered langurs (leaf monkey), long-tailed macaque monkeys, bearded pigs, flying lemurs, monitor lizards as well as many different bird species. Fascinating plant life includes the mangroves, a system onto itself. There are also the strangling fig trees, carnivorous pitcher plants and symbiotic insect-plant relationships. Unique geological features mark the coastline, whilst well-marked trails lead to rugged jungle-covered hilltops and secluded beaches.

Return to hotel after tour ended. Free an easy for the rest of the day. (L)

Mangrove & Irrawaddy Dolphin Watching Cruise

(0900hrs-1200hrs / 3 hours)

This trip cruises along the Santubong River and plies the Salak River Delta systems, of which, both flow into the South China Sea. In both, one experience a close-up view of the heavily silted mangrove swamp, a haven for its inhabitants of reptilians to crustaceans and fishes: crocodiles, water monitor lizards, otters, mud skippers, mangrove crabs, prawns, edible jellyfish, shell fish, monkeys and more. The swamp sustains many different species of trees, the most important being the black and red mangroves, locally known as “bakau” or “Bako’”. Easily mistaken as wasteland, the area experiences tidal rises that leaves rich silts on which the mangrove thrives, giving rise to symbiotic relationship affecting all flora and fauna, aquatic life and coastal organisms. The Irrawaddy or snubfin dolphin, inhabits the rivers, estuaries and shallow coastal areas. The Santubong area remains one of the best places in Sarawak to view this unusual looking marine mammal. When seen, they swim and dive around open waters less than 30 metres deep. Visitors will need a keen eye to spot the dolphins and they are best seen when they frolic near local fishing boats that are hauling in the catch!

At the end of the tour, return to the boat club for transfer to your hotel. Free and easy for the rest of the day.
